Abstract
To investigate the proliferative activity and relation to malignancy using numbers of silver stained nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) pre cell in benign, borderline, and malignant mucinous tumors of the ovary, AgNOR silver staining was
performed in
10 cases of ovarian mucinous cystadenoma, 4 cases of borderline malignancy, and 6 cases of mucinous cystadenocarcinoma.
@ES The results were summarized as follows;
@EN 1. AgNORs per cell were 1.48 in mucinous cystadenoma, 1.84 in mucinous cystadenoma of borderline malignancy, and 2.93 in mucinous cystadenocarcinoma.
2. Mucinous cystadenoma showed one or two large black dots with well defined margin and mucinous cystadenocarcinoma revealed several fine black dots with ill defined margin.
3. Mucinous cystadenoma and mucinous cystadenoma of borderline malignancy showed significantly less AgNORs per cell than mucinous cystadenocarcinoma, Mucinous cystadenoma of borderline malignancy expressed more AgNORs per cell than mucinous
cystadenoma, but the different was not significant.
These results revealed that AgNOR reflect well the proliferative activity and malignant potential in mucinous tumors of the ovary. AgNOR silver staining may helpful in differentiation of mucinous cystadenoma of borderline malignancy from mucinous
cystadenocarcinoma.
